How anthropologists argue about color

Six positions, each tied to the sources that made it and to what this project's own fieldwork can test. The records on this site are built so that a reader from any of these positions can use them; this page says where they sit and what each position predicts for the data.

Where this archive stands The database does not adjudicate between these positions. It records two kinds of evidence side by side, first-person testimony in the contributor's own language and a standardized rating, so that the same record can be read by a universalist looking for regularities, a relativist looking for meanings that do not translate, a historian looking for generational drift, and a psychologist looking for a valence pattern. Where the wave 1 data leans, it leans toward Sahlins: the ratings behave like the published cross-national means, and everything a contributor argued about was a meaning, a rule, or a story that the numbers cannot hold.

Universalism: the basic color terms

Berlin and Kay; the World Color Survey

In 1969 Berlin and Kay argued that languages draw their basic color terms from a small universal inventory and add them in a constrained order: first a dark-cool and a light-warm term, then red, then green or yellow, then blue, then brown, then the rest. The World Color Survey later tested the claim on speakers of 110 unwritten languages, asking each to name 330 Munsell chips and to pick the best example of every term, and found the focal colors clustering in the same regions of color space across unrelated languages. (Berlin & Kay, 1969; Kay et al., 2009)

Predicts
If perception does the work, first associations and rating positions should look alike across backgrounds: red high on energy and on meaning everywhere, black calm and traditional everywhere.
Wave 1 shows
Red's cultural-meaning mean of 6.7 and black's low energy scores fit the universalist expectation, but wave 1 cannot test it: every contributor shares Chinese heritage, so agreement among them is not evidence about universality.
Wave 2 should
Recruit outside the Chinese diaspora, then compare the quick-fire associations and the calm-to-energetic column across backgrounds before comparing anything else.

The ethnographic critique: color as a sign

Conklin on the Hanunoo; Sahlins

Harold Conklin's 1955 note on the Hanunoo of Mindoro is the classic counterexample. Their four color terms sort the world by lightness against darkness and by wetness against dryness, fresh growth against desiccation, so that a shiny section of brown bamboo can be called by the term an outsider would translate as green. Marshall Sahlins (1976) generalized the point: perception constrains which distinctions are available, but a culture decides which of them mean something, and a color meaning is a sign inside a whole system, not a fact about a wavelength. (Conklin, 1955; Sahlins, 1976)

Predicts
The same color should carry a different strength of meaning in different communities, and the idioms should encode meanings that do not survive translation: the meaning lives in the language, not in the hue.
Wave 1 shows
The meaning-strength scale is where wave 1 varies most between contributors inside one heritage: pink scores from 4 to 7, and the idiom set (hong hong huo huo, lü mao zi, da hong da zi) carries meanings a literal translation loses. That is Sahlins's point observed at small scale.
Wave 2 should
Keep the idiom question in the short protocol; it is the cheapest relativist instrument the project has.

Symbolic anthropology: the triad and the taboo

Turner's Ndembu triad; Douglas on matter out of place

Victor Turner (1967) found that Ndembu ritual runs on three colors, white, red, and black, each tied to a bodily substance (milk and semen, blood, feces and decay) and to a moral register, and argued that the triad is older and more widespread than any hue vocabulary. Mary Douglas (1966) read taboo as a classification rule: dirt is matter out of place, and a prohibition marks a category boundary rather than a preference. (Turner, 1967; Douglas, 1966)

Predicts
Prohibitions should be crisper and more confidently stated than preferences, and should cluster where categories meet: life and death, married and single, the living and the dead.
Wave 1 shows
The sharpest wave 1 answers were rules, not likes: no bright color at a funeral, no living person's name in red ink, no white on the head at grandmother's house, and, from exactly one contributor unprompted, no green hat. Each sits on a category boundary in Douglas's sense.
Wave 2 should
Ask the newcomer question in every short interview (the one color rule you would warn a foreigner about) and code each answer by the boundary it protects.

History: colors have biographies

Pastoureau on blue; Gage

Michel Pastoureau's history of blue (2001) follows a color from near invisibility in Greek and Roman texts to the color of the Virgin, of kings, and, by the twentieth century, Europe's stated favorite, with the Church, the woad and indigo trades, and the state each doing part of the work. John Gage's survey (first published 1993) makes the same case for Western color practice at large: what a color means is an institutional and technological outcome, not a stable fact. (Pastoureau, 2001; Gage, 1999)

Predicts
Meanings should differ by generation inside one community, and the differences should track institutions: markets, states, schools, media.
Wave 1 shows
The generational question produced the richest wave 1 material: harvest red pasted on straw baskets, worker blue as employment and standing, a deep blue bicycle as village status, burial clothes already bought in black, and a Tang dynasty argument that color marked rank long before pink marked girls. Contributors also read living institutions fluently, from the stock ticker that rises red in China to the pink blazer that costs a woman authority in a meeting.
Wave 2 should
Keep the grandparents question, and log the decade and place of each memory so the archive can be read as history and not only as testimony.

Language and perception: the modern synthesis

Winawer and colleagues; Regier and Kay

Winawer and colleagues (2007) showed that Russian speakers, whose language obligatorily separates light blue (goluboy) from dark blue (siniy), discriminate blues across that boundary faster than English speakers do. Regier and Kay (2009) summarized two decades of such work as 'Whorf was half right': color naming is universally constrained, and language still shapes perception, mainly in the right visual field, where the language-dominant hemisphere is doing the looking. (Winawer et al., 2007; Regier & Kay, 2009)

Predicts
Bilingual contributors should sometimes answer differently in different languages, and code-switching inside an interview is data rather than noise.
Wave 1 shows
Every wave 1 interview ran in Mandarin with English code-switching preserved as spoken. One contributor's pink answer arrived in English (it's not for me) inside a Mandarin interview, while her quick-fire answers stayed in Mandarin. The archive publishes English translations with idioms romanized, and keeps the original-language transcripts in the private tier for exactly this reason.
Wave 2 should
Record the language of every quick-fire answer in the log, and for bilingual contributors run the six-color round once in each language when time allows.

Affect and preference: the semantic-differential line

Osgood; Adams and Osgood; Palmer and Schloss; Jonauskaite

Osgood, Suci, and Tannenbaum (1957) introduced the semantic differential: bipolar adjective scales that place any concept in an evaluation, potency, and activity space. Adams and Osgood (1973) applied it to color in 23 cultures and found broad agreement (red active and strong, black bad and strong, white good). Palmer and Schloss (2010) proposed that preference tracks the valence of the objects a color is associated with. Jonauskaite and colleagues (2020) mapped color-emotion associations in 30 nations and found universal patterns further shaped by linguistic and geographic proximity; Jonauskaite and Mohr (2025) reviewed 128 years of this literature. (Osgood et al., 1957; Adams & Osgood, 1973; Palmer & Schloss, 2010; Jonauskaite et al., 2020; Jonauskaite & Mohr, 2025)

Predicts
The rating card, which is a five-scale semantic differential, should reproduce the cross-cultural regularities at small scale: red active, black traditional and negative, pink split by valence.
Wave 1 shows
It does, at n=7 and with no claim beyond that: red 6.7 on meaning strength, black the most traditional and the most negative color, pink the most contested, with like scores spanning the whole 1 to 7 scale.
Wave 2 should
The card stays unchanged so wave 2 pools with wave 1; the comparison of interest is by background, not by color.
