Chinese; design student in the United States, researches Chinese dress history. Interviewed for 33 minutes (Recorded video interview, Mandarin; rating card written by hand from the shared form). Favorite color: Blue now; red held the title for years before. Deep-dive colors this session: Red, Pink, Black.

In Tang official dress, deep red and purple marked rank, not gender. A wife's colors followed her husband's official grade. In a society with explicit male hierarchy, color carried no gender at all. The pink stereotype is a modern invention.

As a little girl I loved pink. Around fourth or fifth grade something clicked and I rejected everything pink. In the last two years it has come back: partly I refuse to be defined by the label, and partly I have decided the feminine part is not a bad thing after all.

From the Qin dynasty the emperor wore black to sacrifice to heaven and earth. Earlier still, heaven sent the dark bird and so the Shang were born. Judged by the older tradition, black was never a rejected color.

One meeting of golden wind and jade dew outshines countless meetings in the mortal world. Love is the blue of the night sky, set with a thread of gold and silver starlight. And we say the river of love: love is a river, so it should be blue.

Heaven Official's Blessing: the two leads meet inside worlds of total red, first blood rain around a ghost bridal sedan, then a maple forest brighter than the robes, so that one color carries death and perfect life at once.

Her grandparents have already bought their burial clothes, all of them black; and her Tang dynasty research argues the gender coding of color is younger than everyone assumes.

Red and yellow lucky by custom, black and white heavy by custom, and she believes the custom without believing the magic: red envelopes are red and gold, and who is unhappy to see a red envelope? White she calls the most complicated color of all, mourning cloth and the robe of Guanyin at once.
